Return Journey: An Artistic Response
As part of the Dylan Thomas Centenary celebrations elysiumoffsite is creating an art project based on Dylan Thomas’ short story Return Journey that was originally written for radio. Return Journey: An Artistic Response was concieved by and is being co-ordinated by Ann Jordan, a Founder Director of elysiumgallery
Community based workshops are being run by established artists, Anna Barratt, Lucy Donald and Tim Kelly, who are working with Terrace Rd Primary School,Cryg Glas, Age Cymru Swansea Bay, Swansea Bay Asylum Seekers Support Group, Esgyr, Caer Las and the general public. The workshop participants are being encouraged to portray their interpretations of their own personal relationships with Swansea as a sense of place, a home, a place of refuge, of work, their hopes and aspirations or maybe just memories of past times.
The artwork generated will be collated and recorded. Some, with copies of archival images of the city will be overlaid or incorporated into film footage of Swansea today resulting in an ‘ArtFilm’: an Artist’s Reponse made by artist and film maker Dave Marchant. This film will be screened along side all the drawings and recordings in an exhibition to be held in Swansea end November/December 2014 . Dates and location to be confirmed
Return Journey is also part of elysiumgallery’s Festival of Drawing From Here to There, 2014 and cultural exchange with Colorado State University, USA. There will be an opportunity for the film to be shown in, The Hatton Gallery, State University of Clorado, Fort Collins Colorado, end of September.
This contemporary artistic response will become a legacy for all those taking part and for the people of Swansea.
Return Journey would like to thank the people of Swansea, Terrace Rd Primary School,Cryg Glas, Age Cymru Swansea Bay, Swansea Bay Asylum Seekers Group, Esgyr, Caer Las, West Glamorgan Archive Service Gwasanaeth Archifau Gorliewin Morgannwg , ATComputors Ltd and the City and County of Swansea for all their participation and support.
elysiumgallery
elysiumgallery is an artist led, self-sustaining enterprise comprising of 25 artist studios and a contemporary art gallery at 2 locations in Swansea City Centre, Wales, United Kingdom. We support 13 artists’ studios and a gallery space at 16 College Street, Swansea and a further 13 studios at 2 Mansel Street, Swansea.
elysiumgallery promotes the work of artists by providing a solid platform from which they can anchor themselves and provide a comprehensive national and international network to increase their exposure.
elysium gallery strives to provide support for emerging and established artists and art organisations as well as encouraging pride and participation in local visual and performing arts in an environment that promotes experimentation, freedom and appreciation in all creative practices. This helps to bridge the large gap between emerging and established artists, whilst continuing to strengthen, promote and sustain the vibrant Welsh arts scene.
The gallery is a curated space, programmed through directed curatorial and panel selection. The organisation has a main programme of events but leaves gaps in its calendar for impromptu events and exhibitions (see gallery hire section). The studios form an artistic community that enables the artists and elysium gallery to support each other.
elysium gallery is not for profit organisation and is not revenue funded by the Arts council of Wales. Revenue from hire of gallery and studio spaces directly funds our programme of activities and running costs.
elysium gallery was established in 2007, and is run by 4 directors; Jonathan Powell, Sarah Williams, Daniel Staveley and Ann Jordan and a dedicated core of volunteers.
